Kealing PTA Volunteer Opportunities 2017-2018

The Kealing PTA offers parents and other family members many different ways to plug in and support Kealing Middle School and the education of our children.

What are your talents or skills? We'd love you to share them with our Kealing community! Do you like to cook? Would you like to bring food to one of our events? Can you help sell t-shirts for 2 hours over lunch or in the evening? Are you interested in reaching out over the weekend to a few of your favorite local businesses in the community? Or does something else interest you? We welcome your ideas!

Urgent Volunteer Needs for 2017-18 

Board Position: Secretary ( can you record and upload the minutes for 2 meeting per month (Executive Board Meeting and General Membership Meeting)

Board Position: Fundraising Committee Chair ( sits on Executive Board so you would need to attend 2 meetings per month). Stay on top of your emails and provide support to the fantastic chairs that are in place below you.


Workroom Support for Teachers: Help teachers in the workroom by volunteering to copy, laminate, and hole punch classroom materials. Volunteers needed for 30 minutes to one hour a week. 

Mentoring: The Kealing Mentoring Program is looking for volunteers to help tutor students in various subjects. We are especially in need of math and science (algebra, pre-calculus, biology, chemistry and/or physics) tutors. Volunteers should also possess the desire to help teach skills for problem solving, setting goals, self-advocacy and assessing outcomes. 

All individuals interested in volunteering must register as a Kealing school-based volunteer and complete a background check through Austin Partners In Education. For more information, contact Dee Gonzales at dee[dot]gonzales[at]austinisd[dot]org or 512-414-6700.

Fundraising Committee.  Leads a number of activities to raise funds to support our Kealing teachers and campus. 


Kealing Men.  A volunteer-led program that provides positive male role models for Kealing's male students. For more information, contact Richard Barner, at Richard_Barner[at]dell[dot]com.


No-Cost Fundraising Committee:  Works to increase Kealing PTA’s participation in Box tops, store % donations, (such as Randall’s, Target, Amazon Smile, Office Depot, etc.), and more. 


Kealing Center Stage Committee: The Kealing PTA’s biggest fundraiser of the year is a fun-packed evening with a silent auction, entertainment, food, and more. 


Spirit Wear:  Volunteers needed to help sell Spirit Wear (Kealing t-shirts, car window stickers, and other goodies) at lunch, athletic events, and other school events. 


Environmental Committee: Helping Kealing be a greener campus and focus efforts around rethinking, reducing, recycling, and beautifying the building and its grounds.  


MLK Day of Service / Peace through Pie Picnic.  On-campus service project on MLK Day.


Membership and Outreach Committee.  Helps the PTA increase its membership and involve parents from throughout the school. 


Thanksgiving Community Meal.  Planning help needed for this annual family-friendly event in November for Kealing families and our neighbors. Contact Dee Gonzales: dee.gonzales[at]austinisd[dot]org 


Reflections Committee. A Texas PTA program that engages students and their families in arts education activities by encouraging students to explore the arts for fun and recognition. 


Community Engagement Committee. Focuses on building and strengthening ties in the community around Kealing, including local businesses, neighborhood groups, and Kealing’s feeder elementary schools. 


Newsletter Coordinators:  Assist with writing articles about the school and PTA for submission in area-neighborhood newsletters and list serves. 

Hospitality Subcommittee:  Organizes refreshments for PTA events as needed, including PTA membership meetings. Assists with creating a welcoming atmosphere at other PTA events as needed. 

Legislative Subcommittee:  Works with ACPTA and other groups to help get the word out to Kealing families, teachers, and staff about opportunities to engage in federal, state, and city policy issues impacting Kealing and our students. 

Parent Education Subcommittee:  Coordinates educational opportunities for parents, on issues such as raising teenagers, media access, and mental health, through speakers, book talks, and other opportunities. 

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Subcommittee:  Coordinates the secret pal program for teachers and puts on a series of events throughout the year to thank Kealing teachers and staff for their commitment to Kealing students. 

Academic Support:  Assists Kealing with recruiting mentors and tutors for Kealing students to support their academic success.
